Marco Rubio: `We Must Repeal Obamacare.`

August 28th, 2010 0 Comments

Marco Rubio is going to win the Florida Senate seat this coming November. Earlier this year I read quite a few articles about what a rising star he was becoming. After seeing him speak at CPAC 2010, I was easily won over into believing the same thing (despite Harry Reid comment: “I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican.”).

Here’s a good example of his style and political philosophy.

We`re Not Interested in a Republican Majority in Congress — We`re Interested in a Conservative Majority in Congress

Dick Armey, the chairman of FreedomWorks: ‘Intolerable’ for GOP to not back Paul Ryan’s ‘road map.’

My take on the reason much of the Republican Leadership is afraid to openly support the Roadmap is that they believe they’ll win a majority of the House in November just by virtue of 1) the public’s anger over the incredible spending by Obama & the Democrats,  and 2) coupled with their fear that a large number of Americans won‘t actually support scaling back spending and other hard choices if it affects them personally. And, they may be correct.

Biden: Iraq Could Be One of the Great Achievements of This Administration.

August 28th, 2010 0 Comments

This past February Joe Biden said: “I am very optimistic about — about Iraq. I mean, this could be one of the great achievements of this administration.

Jake Tapper noted that President Obama plans to address the nation to note the drawdown of combat troops in Iraq.

From Ed Morrisey:

Perhaps Obama will have the grace to admit this when the occasion presents itself next week. If he does, it will reflect well on the current Commander in Chief. If not, Boehner’s video makes the truth obvious anyway.

I hope he does.

New Zealand: Where the Words `Profit` & `Postal Service` Belong in the Same Sentence.

August 24th, 2010 0 Comments

I recall when Obama referenced the US Post Office competing with Fed Ex last year. I discussed it here and here.

Now I read where New Zealand’s Postal Service not only shows a profit, but very large profit.  From Tom Morgan, If they can do it, why can’t we?

Our Postal Service announced in early August it is hemorrhaging at the rate of $14 billion this year.

The New Zealand system:

will make a profit this year equivalent to $3.7 billion. That is in U.S. dollars.

Charlie Cook Interview. Rand May Lose, Reid May Win & R`s Win The House.

August 23rd, 2010 0 Comments

In an interview with WSJ’s Jerry Seib, veteran political analyst Charlie Cook said he believes Republicans will re-claim the House in the Fall mid-term elections. He also said Harry Reid may defeat Sharon Angle in Nevada and wondered whether Rand Paul can lose in Kentucky.

I think it’s a fair statement that Charlie Cook is not only the most respected prognosticator but also the most accurate predictor of elections.

Very encouraging. Is it snowing in August?

These are the kinds of indicators that make me believe we may see a real sweep on November 2nd. I’d prefer to hear our President say he’s decided against spreading the wealth, but that’s not going to happen.

Dick Armey to GOP: Why Don’t You Have the Guts to Support Paul Ryan’s Roadmap?

August 22nd, 2010 0 Comments

Today Dick Armey said what so many of us disillusioned Republicans Conservatives think. We want elected officials who are going to really fix things. Not just talk about it, but actually have the courage to do something.

That’s why so many people voted in 54 new Republicans in 1994. The Contract With America listed 10 specific issue that they were going to address.  And, they accomplished 9 out of 10 items in less than 100 days.

Then every year got worse as Republicans got consumed with their own power. They became just like the Democrats, spending more and more to please certain constituents. Their only mission became maintaining their positions and getting re-elected.

Paul Ryan’s Roadmap lays out a written plan. It may not be the best plan. It may not be accepted by the majority of Americans, but at least it’s an honest plan to try to repair entitlements (which many acknowledge is unsustainable). Obama and Democrats continually demagogue the issue repeating the lie that Republicans want to eliminate Social Security. George W. Bush tried to address the issue in 2005 and Republicans ran for the hills.

Another example of actually tackling our real problems are given by the Heritage Foundation. Their plan – Solutions for America addresses 23 discrete policy areas, and recommends 128 specific policy prescriptions for Congress to consider.

A Case For Capitalism (Some Great Quotes).

August 17th, 2010 1 Comment

For those of you who believe in a Market Economy, check out The American Thinker web site.

Here’s a great sample:

The Case For Capitalism By Sally Julian

Wherever people are dependent and unable to work for themselves, the human spark that desires private property is killed, and life is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.” Enough time as a dependent, and the human becomes degraded and abased. After the fall of the Soviet Union, CNN filmed what had happened in one of the Soviet collective farms. Anyone there was offered a farm of his own. Only one family, who must have had some distant memory of what private property meant, took them up on the offer. They worked from dawn to dusk. The rest of the collective farm members were often drunk and slept until noon while the tractors rusted in the field. The motivation to work collectively vanished. The expectation in these communities to share everything went against human nature.

A market economy based on private property, buttressed by the rule of law, is truly the best environment for mankind. People will work harder and with ingenuity if they know they have earned rewards from that labor. When the rewards are given to them for nothing, there is frustration and despair. Capitalism benefits more people than any other economic system. To work for oneself and reap the rewards is a basic human aspiration.

Winston Churchill:

The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of its blessings.  The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of its miseries.

Margaret Thatcher:

We have been ruled by men who live by illusions … the illusion that there is some other way of creating wealth than hard work and satisfying your customers.”

Abraham Lincoln:

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. … You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down … you cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

Did GWB Really Visit Ft. Hood Without The Media Reporting It? Well, No.

August 17th, 2010 0 Comments

Below is the text of one of those emails we all get from friends. I had no way of knowing if it was true. After I forwarded it to 2 family members I got curious as to why I had never heard about this visit, so I did a little digging.

Here’s the original email:

The doctor had his TV on in his office when the news of the military base shootings at Ft. Hood , TX came on. The husband of one of his employees was stationed there.

He called her into his office and as he told her what had happened, she got a text message from her husband saying, “I am okay.” Her cell phone rang right after she read the message. It was an ER nurse,” I’m the one who just sent you a text, not your husband. I thought it would be comforting but I was mistaken in doing so. I am sorry to tell you this, but your husband has been shot 4 times and he is in surgery.”

The soldier’s wife left Southern Clinic in Dothan , AL and drove all night to Ft.Hood. When she arrived, she found out her husband was out of surgery and would be OK. She rushed to his room and found that he already had visitors there to comfort him. He was just waking up and found his wife and the visitors by his side. The nurse took this picture.

What? No news crews and cameras? This is how people with class respond and pay respect to those in uniform. I sent my cousin in Fayetteville , N.C. (Retired from Special Forces) that picture of George W. visiting the wounded at Ft. Hood . I got this reply:

What is even better is the fact George W. Bush heard about Fort Hood, got in his car without any escort, apparently they did not have time to react, and drove to Fort Hood. He was stopped at the gate and the guard could not believe who he had just stopped. Bush only asks for directions to the hospital then drove on. The gate guard called that “The President is on Fort Hood and driving to the hospital.”

The base went bananas looking for Obama. When they found it was Bush, they immediately offered escort. Bush simply told them to shut up and let him visit the wounded and the dependents of the dead.

He stayed at Fort Hood for over six hours, and was finally asked to leave by a message from the White House.

Obama flew in days later and held a “photo” session in a gym, and did not even go to the hospital.

I Googled “george w bush Ft Hood visit” and then went to FactCheck.org. Here’s the short answer:

Q: Did President George W. Bush drop everything to visit Ft. Hood victims? Was he ordered away by the Obama administration?

A: Bush did visit the wounded at Ft. Hood, but a Bush spokesman says that his visit was coordinated with base officials and that he was not asked to leave by the White House.

Here’s the Full Answer:

The e-mail contains a grain of truth. President George W. Bush did visit the wounded at Ft. Hood only a day after the tragic Nov. 5 shooting spree on the base, as was reported publicly at the time by a number of news outlets. But since then, we’ve had a steady stream of queries about this chain e-mail’s description of the visit, in which the author embellishes the facts considerably. Army officials would not comment, so we spoke to Bush spokesman David Sherzer, who was happy to set the record straight.

Juan Williams: Media Always Make Blacks the Victims and Whites the Perpetrators

August 16th, 2010 0 Comments

Juan Williams:

They don’t have to turn it. I mean, this is the way the media treats all race stories in this country, Jon. It’s always that black people are the victims, white people are the perpetrators. You know, it’s white guilt, black victimhood and it’s constant, it’s in every area, not just this, but in terms of our political discussions about race that to me are always one-side and twisted and prevent us from having the honest kind of dialog that is so important.
