§ One Response to 16 Trillion Reasons

  • I know the right care precious little about cold hard facts, but please humor me here on this:

    As Forbes (there’s a liberal perspectivce, eh?) points out in the current issue, the right-wing propaganda in regards to debt/deficits that is hurled against the President is basically without factual merit.

    Their conclusion — shockingly– is that Obama is the thriftiest ‘spender” since Eisenhower. Surprised? Me too, honestly. Read it yourself:
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/rickungar/2012/05/24/who-is-the-smallest-government-spender-since-eisenhower-would-you-believe-its-barack-obama/

    As Forbes thoughtfully acknowledges, the fist common trick used by the right to fudge the numbers is to assign the FY 2009 budget (with its huge deficit) to Obama. This is dishonest; the ’09 budget is already in place by the time he hit the Oval office in January. A true sleight of hand to ignore such.

    I would also point to this chart, summarizing spending/deficits, etc by presidnetial years and terms:

    http://www.skymachines.com/US-National-Debt-Per-Capita-Percent-of-GDP-and-by-Presidental-Term.htm

    Now, let’s roll the tape again –as the GOP and their right wing puppets are so prone to do— to where they play back Obama’s promise to “cut the deficit in half by the end of my first term”.

    Putting aside the fact that most of the loudmouths spewing this as a broken promise do not know the difference betwen DEBT and DEFICITS, the facts highlighted here offer these points;

    FACT: When Obama came into office, the Deficit of his predecessor’s final year was 15.1% of GDP.
    FACT: The deficit of Mr Obama’s third year (the last completed one for which he is responsible) is ….are you ready?…4.8% of GDP

    So, not only has Mr Obama delivered (so far) on his promise to “cut the deficit in half”, he has actually far exceeded that promise. If my calculator can be trusted, the figure is 68%.

    Simple question: an anything I am stating here be denied?

    Thank you for your time and space…
